Depression can be caused by numerous neurotransmitter imbalances (Serotonin, Dopamine & Norepinephrine) & because physicians do not test NT levels, which imbalance is causing ur depression, they opt to pick the most popular medication first (SSRIs). However, if u look at the literature on what effects each of these NTs has & compare that to ur particular depression features, u may be able to see which drug might be the most beneficial for you. They have been shown to be equally effective at treating depression in clinical trials, but wellbutrin seems to be better tolerated in that it does not cause sexual dysfunction or weight gain. In fact, Wellbutrin often causes weight loss & in contraindicated for bulimia or anorexia.
Here is a list of some co-existing symptoms that might lead u to pick one drug over the other:
Obsessive & compulsive (OCD), aggression, anger, depression related to event , loss of appetite --> SSRI
Irritable bowel syndrome, addiction (smoking, food or drugs), obesity, ADHD, profound anti-social behaviors, loss of sexual pleasure or drive --> Wellbutrin
Welbutrin blocks dopamine reuptake primarily whereas Zoloft focuses on serotonin. Each has differing success with ppl depending on their neurotransmitter problem. Wellbutrin also tends to have fewer sexual side effects. Zoloft tends to work better with anxiety. For the most part, it depends on you and how your body responds to each.
Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is a norepinephrine & dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Zoloft (Sertraline) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. They work on the brain differently.
. Sertraline is primarily used to treat clinical depression in adult outpatients as well as obsessive-compulsive, panic & social anxiety disorders in both adults & children.
. Bupropion is an effective antidepressant on its own but it is particularly popular as an add-on medication in the cases of incomplete response to the first-line SSRI antidepressant. In contrast to many psychiatric drugs, including nearly all antidepressants, bupropion does not cause weight gain or sexual dysfunction.Bupropion is more effective than SSRIs at improving symptoms of hypersomnia & fatigue in depressed patients.
